14.3% Defined Benefits
In addition to your accrued Defined Benefits in the APSS, you may be eligible to claim an additional TPD benefit payment. TPD is not the same as permanent incapacity defined under superannuation law, but is as defined under the APSS Trust Deed. To read the full definition of TPD, see total and permanent disablement.
To be eligible for a TPD benefit payment, you must generally meet two conditions:
- You must have ceased employment with Australia Post or your Associated Employer because of the injury or illness for which you are making the TPD claim. For instance, you may not be eligible to apply for a TPD benefit if you ceased employment because of a redundancy or termination.
and
- You must have served a waiting period of six months BEFORE making a claim. Certain exceptions may be granted to reduce this waiting period, such as if you are terminally ill.
Tax will generally be payable on any benefits that are paid to you in cash if you’re under age 60. If your super is paid to you because you have a terminal medical condition, the lump sum benefit may be tax-free if paid to you in cash.
For more detailed information on TPD benefits and how they are calculated, refer to your PDS in the product dislosure section of this website.
